About Central States Fair, Inc.

Central States Fair, Inc. is a non-profit, member-driven organization dedicated to enriching the cultural and economic fabric of Rapid City and the surrounding region. We proudly produce two flagship annual events—the Central States Fair and the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo®—while also managing the Central States Fairgrounds in partnership with Pennington County.

Leadership and Community Engagement

Our organization is guided by a devoted 14-member volunteer Board of Directors. Elected by our fair membership at the annual March meeting, board members serve four-year terms, ensuring that our events and initiatives remain rooted in the values and interests of our community.

A Celebration of Local Culture and Heritage

Every August, the Central States Fair transforms our city into a vibrant celebration of local talent and tradition. Attendees enjoy a diverse range of activities—from free carnival entertainment and open-class competitions featuring home arts, crafts, gardening, woodcarving, and culinary arts, to engaging cattle shows and dynamic horse events. Complementing these daytime festivities, nine nights of grandstand entertainment—from live concerts and PRCA Range Days Rodeo to the thrilling X-Broncs finals—keep the excitement alive well into the evening. Beyond the fair itself, the Central States Fairgrounds serve as a community hub, hosting events on more than 350 days each year.

Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo®

As South Dakota’s second largest event—only surpassed by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally—the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo® draws an estimated 331,000 visitors. This iconic festival brings a taste of the Old West to Rapid City, featuring over 120 diverse livestock, horse, and rodeo events along with a vibrant marketplace of more than 300 vendors. Cowboys and ranchers from near and far compete in various cattle shows, ranch rodeos, and horse events, while live concerts and a beer festival add to the festive atmosphere. Whether you’re competing in the AQHA Horse Show, challenging yourself on a wild bronc, or showcasing prized livestock, this event encourages everyone to “Do Big Things” in Rapid City. An economic impact study has highlighted its significance, reporting an overall impact of $21.9 million—with a direct contribution of $15.2 million—to our local economy.

Supporting Our Community

Central States Fair, Inc. is deeply committed to the well-being of our region. In addition to our events, we actively support local organizations such as the South Dakota National Guard, Western Junior Livestock Show, Rapid City Police Department, Pennington County 4-H, and many others. Each year, we contribute more than $120,000 in goods and services, reinforcing our commitment to community growth and development.

Join us in celebrating the best of agriculture, tourism, and community spirit as we continue to create memorable experiences and lasting impacts in Rapid City.
